Icons, Beauty, and the Senses
The Orthodox Church prays with the whole person — mind, body, senses, and soul. Icons, incense, chant, candles, and gestures are not decoration. They are theology made tangible.
Why icons?
Because the Word became flesh. At the Incarnation, God Himself entered the visible world. What can be seen can be depicted. What can be depicted can become a window into prayer.
The Seventh Ecumenical Council (787 AD) confirmed that honoring an icon passes to the person depicted — never to the wood and paint. We venerate; we do not worship. Worship (latreia) belongs to God alone.
Beauty as evangelism
Ancient chroniclers tell us that Rus' chose Orthodoxy not because of the strongest argument, but because of the most heavenly worship. Beauty is missionary. In a tired and ugly age, the Church's beauty is still one of Christ's quietest invitations.
