The Jesus Prayer: Where to Begin
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
Twelve words. A whole interior life. Orthodox Christians have prayed this prayer for nineteen centuries — monastics in caves, mothers in kitchens, soldiers on the march, children falling asleep.
Why this prayer
It is Scriptural (Luke 18:13, Mark 10:47), it is Trinitarian in its confession of Christ, and it is honest — it asks nothing for itself except mercy.
How to begin
- Find a quiet place and a quiet minute.
- Stand, or sit upright. Cross yourself.
- Breathe slowly. On the in-breath: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God," — on the out-breath: "have mercy on me, a sinner."
- When your mind wanders, do not be angry. Just return gently.
- Begin with five minutes. Add a minute a week.
A warning of love: the Jesus Prayer is not a technique. It is a conversation with a Person. Advanced practice (prayer ropes, breathing rules, long vigils) belongs under the guidance of a spiritual father. Start simply, and let the Lord lead.
